One must conduct through check-up of their home elements to ensure all the exposures are covered and no problem will cause to new paint. If ignored can lead to expensive problems in future such as:

  3. Chipping
  4. Chalking
  5. Efflorescence
  6. Cracking
  7. Peeling off
  8. Fading
  9. Flaking

While everyone is talking about best painting practices & process of painting, very few really pays attention to the crux of foundation where paint is going to be applied.

If the substrate is not thoroughly checked prior to painting, it can ruin the interiors no matter how premium the paint is.

Here are 4 must dos before you paint your House:

  1. Conduct in depth inspection of your interior structure.
    1. Check water prone elements inside your property such as WC & Balcony:
      1. Check interior walls adjacent to bathroom/ WC are not damp.
      1. Check door frames are made of granite/ marble stone and not wooden.
      1. Check for any blackish dirt observed around tile joints inside bathroom
      1. Check if tile joints inside bathroom are not open where water can penetrate easily.
      1. Check if tiles are not broken or hollow.
      1. Check there is no loose plumbing joints/connections or rust at edges on plumbing elements such as Flush tank, shower, angle cock, jet spray, wash-basin etc.
      1. Check if any gaps or porosity observed around Nahani trap.
      1. Check if the sprout from exterior surface is in working condition.
    1. Check water prone elements inside your property such as Kitchen:
  2. Check if there are any gaps around kitchen edges and corners.
  3. Check for any loose plumbing connections, rust edges.
  4. Check if any gaps or porosity observed around Nahani trap.
  • Conduct in depth assessment of condition of exteriors:
  • Any cracks observed in between brickwork and column/ beam structures.
  • Check if windows frames made of granite/ marble stone and not of wooden make.
  • Check if the sealants applied on window frame joints is intact and functional.
  • Check exposures for below elements:
    • Hairline cracks on external wall
      • 2-5mm cracks on external wall
      • Wall mounted AC frames
      • Split AC holes
      • Drain pipes running over walls. Adequate distance from walls.
      • Openings around the plumbing pipes well grouted and patched.
      • Vegetation growth observed.
  • Check for plaster surface conditions like hollowness or cracked plaster.
  • Know that what methodology was followed for painting existing surface.

General practice followed by builders.

  1. Lime water coat: Donga is a lime water coat that is applied on plastered walls after curing period is completed. Donga coat is applied after a minimum of 21 days of Neeru finished walls and ceiling. This lime water coat helps absorb moisture from the walls to achieve better paint finish. It acts as a crack filler for hairline cracks on freshly plastered sanla neeru surface. Also it performs as a basic coat for distemper.
    1. For certain surfaces (POP Punning zone and drywall), one layer of primer is to be applied before the putty and painting. Due to the preliminary’s cement quality, it makes the ideal surface for putty.
    1. Wall Putty is a compound blend of certain components, for example, white concrete, chalk, and so forth 2-3 layers of putty give a smooth base to the roof and walls for painting.
    1. Application of paint coat as recommended by manufactures is followed.
